At its first meeting of 2018 on February 8, the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board set the stage for important work for the year and beyond:

Task Forces struck
  • Regional Agriculture Master Plan Task Force (RAMP) -  to provide a policy framework for conserving and maintaining a secure supply of prime agricultural lands to support the regional food system, to diversify the agri-food production base and value added growth of the agri-economy, and to guide agriculture supportive infrastructure investments. Also required: the development of land evaluation and site assessment tool to qualify and quantify the prime agricultural lands to be conserved in the Region.
    • Board approved the Task Force Terms of Reference and appointed seven Task Force members - four Counties, City of Edmonton and two Urbans:
      • Mayor Tanni Doblanko, Leduc County
      • Mayor Rod Shaigec, Parkland County
      • Mayor Alanna Hnatiw, Sturgeon County
      • Councillor Paul Smith, Strathcona County
      • Councillor Michael Walters, City of Edmonton
      • Councillor Kathy Barnhart, Town of Beaumont
      • Mayor Barry Turner, Town of Morinville
    • Will hold its first meeting  at 9:00 a.m. March 2, 2018 in the Ballroom, Best Western Hotel, 3101 43 Ave, Stony Plain
  • Metropolitan Region Servicing Plan Task Force (MRSP) -  to support the implementation of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Growth Plan. Note: as per the MRSP charter, the EMRB will not be operationalizing the Plan or delivering services. 
    • Key project deliverables:
      • A policy framework linking the Growth Plan and the Servicing Plan.
      • Inventory of existing services, including current capacity and service provision.
      • List of current intermunicipal services and agreements for sharing of services.
      • List of services, including capacity and service provision, required to support future growth through the implementation of the Growth Plan. 
      • Identify opportunities for increased efficiency and collaboration in the sharing of services.
      • For future services to be provided on an intermunicipal basis, if any, outline how each service will be:
        • intermunicipally delivered, including which municipality will lead delivery of the service, and
        • intermunicipally funded,
        • and a timeframe for implementing the services.
      • Identification of the benefits of enhanced efficiency and optimized services shared amongst municipalities in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region.
      • Implementation recommendations for consideration by the Board.
    • Board approved the Task Force Terms of Reference and appointed seven Task Force members, City of Edmonton, two Cities, two Towns, two Counties:
      • Mayor Don Iveson, City of Edmonton
      • Mayor Gale Katchur, City of Fort Saskatchewan
      • Councillor Ray Watkins, City of St. Albert
      • Mayor Ray Ralph, Town of Devon
      • Mayor William Choy, Town of Stony Plain
      • Mayor Tanni Doblanko, Leduc County
      • Councillor Dave Anderson, Strathcona County
    • Will hold its first meeting at 9:00 a.m. March 22, 2018 at La Cite Francophone
2018/19 Budget passes Strategic Plan process begins 
  • Following its meeting February 8, 2018, the Board met for the afternoon in a retreat format to review and prioritize issues and activities as a first step toward the creation of its new Strategic Plan. 
  • In a facilitated discussion Board members reviewed the 50 year Vision, considered current values and principles and looked at potential focus areas for strategic priorities.
  • Their conclusions will be brought back as a Draft Strategic Plan, first to the Executive Committee in March and then, with Executive comments, to the Board in April. Final Board approval is scheduled for June, for July implementation.
