Dr. Jodi Abbott to step down as Chair of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board

Innovative plans for shared services, agricultural and economic development top list of regional accomplishments during Dr. Jodi Abbott’s tenure.

The Chair of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board (EMRB), Dr. Jodi Abbott, will step down from her role this fall following a successful three-year mission to establish a strong foundation of economic and regional development initiatives for the Region.
Dr. Abbott, a long-standing and passionate advocate of transformative, collaborative change in the Edmonton Metro Region, was appointed Chair of the EMRB in the fall of 2017. During her tenure, the organization has inspired regional thinking and set the stage for the Region and its projected growth for the next 20 years. She currently serves as President and CEO of the University Hospital Foundation and cited the growing demands of the Foundation as the reason for her decision to step down from her role with EMRB.
“It’s been an honour to Chair the Board of the Metro Region.  I’m proud of the work that we have done to leverage the collective experience of all of our municipalities to enhance regional prosperity and improve the overall quality of life for residents of the Region.  I believe strongly in the regional model and that the work we have done has positioned the Edmonton Metro Region for the global stage.”

Under the guidance of Dr. Abbott, the EMRB has initiated several subject-specific regional plans, which capture a shared investment for shared benefit concept, regional land use priorities and a Metro Region Servicing Plan that will allow for the delivery of services otherwise unattainable for some communities. The work of the Board has also facilitated the launch of Edmonton Global, whose focus is on attracting and retaining investment and trade in the Region.
“Municipalities and residents across our Region are indebted to the commitment and vision Dr. Abbott brought to the role of Board Chair. Her leadership has helped make our Region resilient in uncertain times, and has positioned us for success in the future. We thank Dr. Abbott for her service, and offer our unconditional support in her role with the University Hospital Foundation.”
William Choy, Mayor of Stony Plain, Vice-Chair Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board
Dr. Abbott’s last day as Chair will be September 11, 2020.
