Connecting a Region
on the go.

TRANSPORTATION

Our Integrated Regional Transportation Master Plan is our future-ready plan for efficient movement of goods and regional mobility to connect our communities to what matters and our economy to the world.

The transportation master plan lays the groundwork for a multi-modal regional transportation network to implement Re-imagine. Plan. Build., the Edmonton Metropolitan Region growth plan. Through regional partnerships, we have created a platform within the regional travel model to support evidence-based decision-making around the prioritization and funding of transportation infrastructure in the region.

Our Region is on the move.

We need a plan that not only keeps up with today, but plans ahead for the future transportation needs of citizens and businesses in the Region.

Transportation infrastructure provides the critical links that move people and goods across our region, and create regional prosperity. Making sure we have the necessary roads, bridges, pathways, and transportation options that our growing region needs, where and when we need them, is how we create an attractive, sustainable and competitive region.

Harmonizing transportation planning priorities and land use will create an efficient and integrated regional transportation network that will allow municipalities to connect in new ways and stretch investment further at greater value.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

We need to be able to move two million citizens across our Region with ease.

How ever you choose to move, whatever goods you choose to move, wherever you are, and wherever you're headed, our transportation plan will make sure the Region has the right infrastructure and services to get you there, safely, and efficiently.

Our Integrated Regional Transportation Master Plan will make sure we aren’t left behind, and that the Region has the necessary transportation infrastructure and mobility options to accommodate another one million regional citizens by 2044.

In doing this work, we engaged with various stakeholders and significant regional partners such as Edmonton Global, EIA, CP Rail, CN Rail and many more.

How we developed our plan…

IRTMP Task Force Members (2019-21)

Mayor Gale Katchur, City of Fort Saskatchewan (Chair)
Mayor John Stewart, City of Beaumont (Vice Chair)
Councillor Tim Cartmell, City of Edmonton
Councillor Nicole Boutestein, Town of Morinville
Councillor Justin Laurie, Town of Stony Plain
Councillor Bill Tonita, Strathcona County
Mayor Alanna Hnatiw, Sturgeon County
Michael Botros, Alberta Transportation (ex officio, non-voting)

Initiated in 2019, the development of an updated integrated regional transportation master plan (IRTMP) was led by a task force including mayors and council members from across the Region. The task force was supported by a working group of technical experts from regional municipalities.

Having fulfilled its mandate, the IRTMP task force was stood down following the Board’s approval of the revised IRTMP in June 2021, and the approval of the new data-informed prioritization process in August 2021.

The EMRB will continue to use the prioritization process and transportation model to update the Region’s annual transportation priorities list. This list is submitted to the Government of Alberta for consideration in the province’s annual capital planning and budgeting process.
